If you were asked to give a working definition of dignity, could you? Would you give a solid definition that adequately captures the word’s meaning, or would you have to wrestle with it for a while, searching for the right phrases?
Chances are you fall in the second category and that’s ok. Many of us do. Dignity is one of those lofty, yet elusive words whose meaning we intrinsically know but have difficulty verbalizing.
We want to change it so that you’ll never have that problem again.
Today, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world celebrate dignity during Global Dignity Day. On this day, we take the time to understand, process, and appreciate ‘dignity’ and its promotion for all humankind.
So again, what exactly is dignity?
Dignity is simply the freedom to make decisions governing one’s own life, and having this right respected by others.
Easy enough, don’t you think? But how many people around the world are living a truly dignified life? The adverse forces of poverty, injustice, and inequality constantly surround us and try to smother the flames of life and liberty from the human experience. Nevertheless, we choose to overcome these stations of evil and despair and reclaim our dignity and divine purpose in the world.
You should too.
This Global Dignity Day, Operation HOPE invites you to take the first steps towards living a decidedly dignified life. You, and you alone, have the power to define what that means and looks like for you.
A great place to start is with your financial wellbeing.
Operation HOPE celebrates and encourages the flourishing of dignity 365 days a year through our global operations and programs. We believe that financial dignity is foundational and essential to living an empowered and productive life. When your financial outlook gets brighter new opportunities begin to unfold for you, your family, and your community.
As you continue to celebrate Global Dignity Day, we encourage you the first step towards redefining your future by partnering with HOPE and taking advantage of any one of our many programs focused on financial dignity, development, and empowerment.
