b'FROM THE ARCHIVESOperation HOPE:A Shelter In The Time Of A StormIn 2017, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico leaving nearly 3 million Americancitizens without electricity and the basic necessities for living a normal life. Years later, in themountains of Maricao, Miguel Santiago was still dealing with the devastation that the hurricaneleft in its path. While Mr. Santiago and his community were grappling with the loss of powerand the limited access they had to needed supplies, he was living without adequate shelter andcovering from the elements. Hurricane Maria ripped off his roof and left part of his homeexposed to heat and rain. In addition to mitigating the devastation to his home, Mr. Santiago continued to manage personal challenges of his own. He is a blind, older gentleman who lives alone. Thanks to the help of others, he was able to secure his home with a blue tarp. However, it was not very effective and he incurred significant damage to his belongings. Erick Serrano Lugo, a Financial Wellbeing Coach and Disaster Program Manager, learned ofMr. Santiagos needs and met with him to assess the damage. Immediately, Erick began to reachout to local agency partners to pull together the support and resources needed to repair Mr.Santiagos roof. Thankfully, Samaritan Purse, another organization working in Puerto Rico, agreed to take up his case and quickly began repairs. After the repairs were finished, Mr. Santiago was able to enjoy the comfort and safety of his home again without any leaking.
