Chris V. Rey, J.D., joins as President of HOPE Initiatives; veteran news executive John D. Nichols named Head of Executive Communications
ATLANTA — Operation HOPE is proud to announce two significant additions to its leadership team: Chris V. Rey, J.D., named President of HOPE Initiatives, and John D. Nichols, who joins the organization as Head of Executive Communications. Together, the appointments reflect a season of remarkable growth for Operation HOPE as the movement behind Capitalism for All, the bestselling book by Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman, and CEO John Hope Bryant, reaches millions and the organization scales its work to match.
“We are building something that will help transform the nation and demonstrate American exceptionalism in a way that the world has never seen before. We’re making free enterprise work for everyone, not the few. That takes leaders who have built institutions and leaders who know how to tell the story. In Chris and John, we found both.”
— John Hope Bryant, Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Operation HOPE

Chris V. Rey, J.D., President, HOPE Initiatives
Rey arrives at HOPE with a career defined by building people and institutions. A decorated 22-year U.S. Army officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal, he became the youngest mayor in the history of Spring Lake, North Carolina, in 2011, leading significant infrastructure investment and economic revitalization. He went on to serve as the 36th International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he launched the organization’s first global strategic plan and a multi-million-dollar affordable housing initiative in Washington, D.C., and in 2023 was appointed the 20th President of Barber-Scotia College, guiding the historic HBCU through record enrollment growth. He holds a Juris Doctor from William & Mary Law School.
As President of HOPE Initiatives, Rey leads Operation HOPE’s national portfolio of initiatives advancing financial capability, entrepreneurship, and AI literacy, including 1 Million Black Businesses (1MBB), Financial Literacy for All (FL4A), HOPE Clubs, HOPE NextGen, and the AI Ethics Council — working with corporate, government, educational, and nonprofit partners to expand economic opportunity nationwide.
“Joining Operation HOPE is an extraordinary opportunity to help build what comes next. I have spent my career creating pathways for people and strengthening institutions, and I believe deeply in Operation HOPE’s mission to expand economic opportunity and financial dignity. I am honored to work alongside John Hope Bryant and this exceptional team to scale initiatives that empower the next generation, strengthen communities, and create lasting economic impact.”

John D. Nichols, Head of Executive Communications
Nichols joins HOPE with decades of experience in strategic communications, media, and public affairs, creating award-winning content and crafting impactful strategies for prominent media organizations, advocacy campaigns, and public figures. As a producer and senior editorial executive at NBCUniversal/MSNBC, he oversaw public affairs programming, developed media brands around emerging on-air influencers, and built the network’s first social media content strategy, with producing credits spanning some of the network’s most recognizable programs, from Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell to PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton. He directed public messaging and response during high-profile national crises, created conversations about the country’s most consequential policy issues, and has been recognized for storytelling excellence, including two Emmy nominations. Nichols went on to serve as Communications and Press Director for a winning, large-scale campaign organization, implementing integrated advocacy strategies across ten contests for 8 million constituents, and founded Spoiler Media Strategy, a consultancy advising high-profile organizations and individuals on content strategy and media relations.
As Head of Executive Communications, Nichols leads communications strategy for Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman, and CEO John Hope Bryant, shaping the voice, messaging, and media presence of the movement for inclusive capitalism as it reaches its widest audience yet.
“Over the years I’ve worked in the newsrooms and campaigns where the national conversation takes shape, and I have rarely seen a message with the reach and urgency of John Hope Bryant’s. Capitalism for All speaks directly to the fair shot and the dignity of ownership that families in every community are looking for. My role is to help that message land clearly and consistently in the places where it can move policy, markets, and minds. I’m grateful to join Operation HOPE as this movement reaches its widest audience yet.”
— John D. Nichols, Head of Executive Communications
A Growing Team for a Growing Movement
“We are thrilled to welcome Chris and John to the executive team to help lead and support the growth happening at Operation HOPE and the greater inclusive economic movement. Growth only counts if you build the capacity to sustain it. Chris has spent his career strengthening institutions and John has spent his shaping how the country hears the stories that matter. Together, in their roles, they make Operation HOPE stronger at exactly the moment the mission demands it. This is what it looks like when a movement matures into an institution built to last.”
— Brian Betts, President and Chief Financial Officer, Operation HOPE
These appointments come amid unprecedented momentum for Operation HOPE, from the bestselling launch of Capitalism for All and its national tour, to the continued expansion of HOPE Inside locations, to recognition as a 2026 Top Workplace in Metro Atlanta. As the movement grows, so does the team building it, and the organization could not be prouder of the leaders now carrying it forward.
