Small businesses are America’s backbone.
- They represent 99.9% of all U.S. companies, contribute roughly 43.5% of GDP, and employ nearly half the workforce
- They generate 64% of all new jobs, around 1.5 million annually
Yet for Black-owned enterprises:
- Only about 3.3% of U.S. employer businesses are Black-owned, even though Black people comprise 14.4% of the population.
- The vast majority (roughly 96%) of Black-owned businesses are non-employer sole proprietorships, far above the national average of 83.8%.
This disparity points to opportunity, not just for Black entrepreneurs, but for the broader economy.

Operation HOPE’s 1MBB initiative, in partnership with Shopify is the national answer to this opportunity gap: to support one million Black-owned businesses by 2030 with coaching, education, and access.
