Statement on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter

Today, we reflect on the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of President Jimmy Carter—a leader of profound humility, moral courage, and an unwavering commitment to human dignity. His passing is not only a moment of deep loss but also an opportunity to celebrate a life dedicated to serving others and improving the world.

President Carter’s belief in peace, justice, and equality resonates deeply with the mission of Operation HOPE. His work to address poverty, expand opportunity, and champion human rights around the world mirrors the values and vision that drive our efforts to uplift underserved communities through economic empowerment and financial literacy. His leadership reminds us that real change happens when we invest in people, work for the common good, and lead with a servant’s heart.

This moment is also deeply personal for me and for our global spokesman and my mentor, Ambassador Andrew Young. As Dr. King’s lieutenant during his fateful work on poverty and later as President Carter’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Young had the privilege of standing alongside two of history’s most visionary leaders in the fight for human rights and economic justice. President Carter’s faith in Ambassador Young’s leadership at the United Nations reinforced his commitment to global equity and understanding, and their partnership served as a powerful reminder that peace and prosperity go hand in hand. Thanks to President Carter, this also became the first Black American appointment as UN Ambassador in the nation’s history. Carter was also a freedom fighter for racial justice, human decency and fair play.

Operation HOPE stands on the shoulders of giants like President Carter and Ambassador Young, who have shown us the power of aligning values with action. We honor President Carter’s extraordinary legacy by continuing to pursue the dream of a world where dignity, opportunity, and hope are available to all.

Our thoughts are with President Carter’s family, the Carter Center, and all who were touched by his life’s work. His example will continue to inspire us as we strive to build a brighter and more equitable future for all.

Rest in peace, President Carter. The seeds of hope and justice you planted will grow for generations to come.
