From Debt to Determination: Ceclia’s Financial Transformation with Operation HOPE

Ceclia, a licensed therapist, connected with Operation HOPE through a networking event late last year, driven by a desire to change her financial situation. She partnered with Wanda McDonald, her financial wellbeing coach at HOPE Inside First Horizon (Orange Mound), who guided her through refining her budget month by month. Even though she was meeting regularly with Wanda, and they were making good progress, Ceclia still faced significant financial challenges, having maxed out her credit cards to fund a few trips that would be great for the short term but bad for her long-term goals—decisions Wanda had strongly advised against.

Wanda quickly recognized the impact of these choices on Ceclia’s financial health. Despite taking on two additional side jobs to support her spending, Ceclia’s financial situation remained unsustainable. Wanda presented her with a crucial decision: continue on her current path or fully commit to the program she had enrolled in through Operation HOPE.

Ceclia made a significant breakthrough in one of their most recent coaching sessions. She resolved to be honest with herself about her spending, and identified the small habits that made big impacts, like her dining out budget. Ceclia then took action. She successfully reduced the balances on both of her credit cards below their credit limits, and she is now focused on building a $1,000 emergency fund and lowering her other card balance.

One of Ceclia’s proudest achievements, though not yet reflected in her credit score, is her decision to release the guilt associated with gift-giving, particularly for the children in her family. She has embraced the idea of replacing monetary gifts with creative alternatives and the invaluable gift of time.

Ceclia’s journey, under Wanda’s guidance, is a testament to her resilience and determination. Despite the financial stress she faced, she is now on a path to greater financial stability. Her commitment to change and her pride in her progress are evident, and she is now an enthusiastic advocate for Operation HOPE, regularly promoting our services.
