Black Enterprise wrote about the ideas I have been pushing to make renting a path toward ownership instead of a dead end.
- A rent reduction for tenants who raise their credit score from 600 to 700.
- A “life event credit”: after 18 months of on-time residency, tenants earn hardship protection they can use during a financial emergency.
- Flexibility on the security deposit, so renters can borrow against it and repay in manageable installments.
Black homeownership still trails the national rate by nearly 20 points. The whole experience around homeownership is tied to aspiration, economic growth and wealth creation. We should design the rental years to lead there.
