From the moment I met Kevin, a U.S. Veteran, I could see that he carried a deep desire to create a better future for himself and his family. However, he was struggling to believe that homeownership was possible for someone like him. As his Financial Wellbeing and Homeownership Coach, my role was not simply to help him improve his credit or create a budget. It was to help him recognize the strength, determination, and potential that already existed within him.
Together, we faced challenges that once seemed overwhelming, including credit obstacles, collection accounts, limited savings, and uncertainty about the homebuying process. Week after week, Kevin showed up, trusted the process, and did the hard work necessary to change his future. Watching him grow in confidence, take control of his finances, and ultimately walk into the beautiful home he once thought was out of reach was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Kevin shared the following note about his journey.
“When I first came to Operation HOPE, becoming a homeowner felt like an impossible dream. I was overwhelmed by financial challenges, unsure of where to begin, and lacked confidence in my ability to qualify for a home.
Everything changed when I began working with Mrs. MarQueta Avant Holmes. From our very first meeting, Mrs. MarQueta saw potential in me that I could not yet see in myself. She provided personalized coaching, financial education, budgeting strategies, savings plans, credit improvement guidance, and support throughout every stage of the homeownership journey. Most importantly, she never allowed me to give up on myself.
Over the course of several months, I worked diligently to improve my financial situation: I increased my credit score to 600, my savings to $1,500, and decreased my debt by $3,500. She also helped me secure down payment assistance of $15,000, which helped make homeownership possible.
I now live in a beautiful resort community in Anna, Texas, a home that once felt completely beyond my reach. Walking through the doors of my new home for the first time was an emotional moment that I will never forget. It represented more than just purchasing a house. It represented perseverance, hope, stability, and a new future for my family.

Kevin’s journey is more than a homeownership success story.
