Before Oprah gave me her Use Your Life Award, her team investigated me. That taught me her golden rule: she only partners with people who have as much reputational capital at stake as she does. I have built my businesses the same way, with partners, auditors and institutions whose names mean something.
We also talked about exits. Why build three locations, then ten, then twenty? To sell it. People say, “But John, then it’s not a Black business.” No, it’s a successful one.
